East Zone Concessionaire Manila Water has started necessary preparations to ensure service continuity with the expected onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Mawar (local name: Betty) this weekend, as the said weather disturbance continues to move towards the Philippines and is projected to bring heavy rains and strong winds in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.

Manila Water has prompted all its operations teams to undertake proactive measures to ensure 24/7 water supply to its customers and minimal to no damage to its facilities in worst-case scenarios.

All Manila Water employees in charge of managing the Company’s facilities, including water and wastewater treatment plants, common purpose facilities, service areas and other offices were asked to continuously monitor weather advisories and government announcements, to check for hazards such as windows, towers, antennas, and other structures that might be compromised by strong winds and heavy rainfall, and to ensure equipment and system back-ups, ample stocks of fuel, batteries, medical and first-aid supplies, food, and other essentials in emergency situations.

Each facility has generator sets that are currently undergoing performance assessment and repairs as needed, to guarantee continued operations in case of power outages. Dewatering pumps and sandbags are also being prepared for deployment in case of flooding in the facilities.

Monitoring of dam levels and other activities at water sources and conducting of quality water sampling activities will also continue. Service areas were asked to coordinate with their respective local government units for siphoning and evacuation areas, and for provision of assistance needed by the LGU.

All service improvement, infrastructure, and network improvement projects will also undergo temporary restoration.

Mobile treatment plants, water tankers, static water tanks and desludging tanks are all on stand-by for deployment in case of need.

“Ensuring that water service will continue in times of emergency and disaster also means lives are valued and protected. Aside from these preparations, rest assured that we are also persistently working with the government to provide all the help we can give to mitigate and minimize the expected effects of the coming typhoon.” says Jeric Sevilla, Manila Water Corporate Communication Affairs Group Director.

Manila Water also encourages its customers to report water service issues they will encounter in their homes or in the community by calling the Manila Water Customer Service Hotline 1627.
