Manila Water has set out to repair a leak on one of its mainlines running along EDSA, in light of the danger of damaging the roadway and even the tunnel wall of the EDSA-Shaw underpass, which may cause inconvenience to motorists and customers alike. The leak was detected at a 500mm steel pipe at the southbound lane just before the corner of Shaw Boulevard. The mainline has been laid around 30 years ago.

Repairs will entail the laying of 210 linear meters of new 500mm steel pipe along EDSA southbound running up to the corner of Shaw Blvd. The newly-laid pipe will be interconnected to the existing 500mm steel pipe at its north end and to the existing 800mm steel pipe at its south end. Point repair was not considered as the damaged pipe is located under a foundation of the MRT, and may compromise the strength of the structure.

Construction will be undertaken 24 hours daily from July 14, 2018 to August 20, 2018. The outermost lane of EDSA in front of Starmall will be closed to traffic in the duration of project. However, pre-works on the project site will begin on July 7, 2018. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is moving the affected bus stop to two (2) temporary locations along EDSA southbound: one approaching Starmall and another after Shaw Blvd. (please see attached map). Vehicles turning right from EDSA to Shaw Blvd. will temporarily pass through the Starmall premises, to allow southbound buses and private vehicles to use the service road exclusively.

Manila Water Corporate Project Management Group Director Ms. Maidy Lynne Quinto also pointed out the urgency of this repair as a means to maximize available water supply in Metro Manila’s East Zone. “The immediate repair of this mainline will also help minimize systems losses in light of critical water levels at the La Mesa Reservoir,” adds Quinto.

Manila Water provides water and used water services to the following areas:  Mandaluyong, Pasig, San Juan, Marikina, Pateros, Taguig, Makati, southeastern part of Quezon City and San Andres and Sta. Ana in Manila including several towns of Rizal Province which include San Mateo, Rodriguez, Antipolo, Cainta, Taytay, Angono, Binangonan, Baras and Jalajala.
