Manila Water highlights role of desludging in achieving sanitation for all
As November marks the celebration of World Toilet Day, Manila Water emphasizes the importance of desludging to achieve sanitation for all.
The United Nations has set November 19 as World Toilet Day, which aims to raise awareness on the role of sanitation and proper wastewater management in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis which affects 3.5 billion people worldwide who still live without safely managed sanitation.
According to UN, to achieve SDG 6 or Clean Water and Sanitation, all household wastes particularly sludge and septage from septic tanks should be contained, transported, treated and disposed of in a safe and sustainable way.
Every month, Manila Water sends out desludging vacuum tankers to go around scheduled barangays in the East Zone of Metro Manila and Rizal Province to provide safe and effective siphoning services to its customers at no additional cost. Through this desludging caravan, customers can expect that the collected wastewater will be properly treated in Manila Water’s Septage Treatment Plants (SpTP) before being discharged back to bodies of water within its service area.
“By regularly providing desludging services, we hope to help improve the condition of the environment in the areas that we serve, safeguard public health and at the same time, contribute to the achievement of the UN SDGs. Sustainability is at the core of what we do, and our commitment to it is reflected in our continuous effort in improving and expanding our services in line with the SDGs,” says Jeric Sevilla, Manila Water Corporate Communication Affairs Group Director.
In November, Manila Water’s desludging trucks will go around the following barangays in Metro Manila: Ugong Norte, Bagong Lipunan ng Crame, Pinyahan, Bahay Toro, Botocan, White Plains, Amihan, Old Capitol Site, West Triangle, Duyan Duyan, Malaya, Project 6, Teacher’s Village East, and Teacher’s Village West in Quezon City; 810, 814, 816, 817, 819, 865 and 867 in the City of Manila; Kapasigan, Malinao, Sagad, San Antonio, Manggahan, and Oranbo in Pasig City; Olympia and Valenzuela in Makati City; San Miguel in Taguig City; and San Roque in Marikina City.
