As it nears its 25th year of providing excellent service not only in the East Zone of Metro Manila and key markets all over the Philippines but also in its international operations, Manila Water feels very proud of being shortlisted as one of the best companies in the forthcoming Global Water Awards.

Manila Water Company, Inc. is a publicly listed company with extensive experience in the Philippine Water Sector from water treatment and distribution to wastewater management and sanitation services. The Company is the concessionaire of the state-run Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System to deliver water supply, wastewater, and sanitation services in the East Zone concession in Metro Manila and the province of Rizal, serving over 7.3 million population. In 2021, the Company was granted a 25-year franchise to operate by the Philippine Government.

Prior to Manila Water’s entry in 1997, the East Zone suffered from various water problems with only 26% of the area’s population having access to 24-hour water supply. Manila Water’s efforts to expand distribution lines and reduce system losses increased water availability to nearly 100% of the central distribution system and reducing NRW register from 63% to an average of 13%, unprecedented in the country’s water space. Nearly 2 million people from marginalized communities were given access to clean and affordable water through the company’s flagship program – Water for the Community.

In 2020, Manila Water received the Best Sustainability Award by Asset Asian Awards for its US$ 500 million sustainability bond issuance – the largest sustainability bond issued by a privately-led, publicly-listed water utility in Asia despite financial challenges due to the pandemic. MWC has also been recognized by the World Bank for its commitment to become a Utility of the Future as a future-focused utility which provides reliable, safe, inclusive, transparent, and responsive water supply and sanitation services through best-fit practices that allow it to operate in an efficient, resilient and sustainable manner.

Manila Water is also known to have pioneered sustainability practices in the Philippines: it was the first domestic company to publish sustainability reports in 2005; the first to communicate climate change policies in 2007; and the first to publish sustainability reports in accordance with GRI Standards in 2010. It is poised to publicize its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies later this year.

Locally, Manila Water has expanded its reach and shared its expertise to top metros and key cities in the Philippines which include the famed beach destination Boracay Island, the gateway to the southern corridor Laguna Province, the international business hub of Clark, the Queen City of Southern Philippines Cebu Province and further down south in Davao, among others.

Manila Water has also forayed into the international water landscape through its business operations in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Despite water security, climate change, political and regulatory challenges, as well as the uncertainties brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Manila Water remains resilient and dedicated to its commitment to providing excellent service, fueled by its pioneering spirit and desire to use its strengths towards its vision of better lives and resilient economies through critical infrastructure, whichever part of the world it may reach.
