The Department of Energy led by Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi honored Manila Water in the prestigious Don Emilio Abello Energy Efficiency Awards (DEAEEA) held recently at Maxims Hotel, Newport City, Pasay.

William Alcantara, head of Energy Management of Manila Water, was awarded as a Certified National Expert for Pumping System Optimization by the DOE and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The recognition comes after Alcantara has successfully fulfilled the requirements for certification including reports submission, audits and a certifying exam.

Three of Manila Water’s water supply facilities were also recipients of Citation and Special Awards for notable performance and contribution in energy efficiency and conservation. Kingsville Pumping Station received a Citation Award, conferred to a company that has improvement in its Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) between 3 % to 5% from the previous year and with substantial energy efficiency and conservation projects. Meanwhile, the Siruna Pumping Station and the San Juan Pumping Station were each given a Special Award for improvement in its SEC between 1% to 3% versus the previous year.

“The awards are given to outstanding establishments and energy managers who have undertaken or who are responsible for conducting energy efficiency and conservation programs that redounded to considerable savings in their energy consumption,” Secretary Cusi said.

“Receiving the DEAEE awards for three straight years shows that energy efficiency has gained ground in Manila Water. This recognition is a great team effort and the Energy Management team gives due credit to those who have championed energy programs in their respective units — especially the Water Supply Operations, Engineering and Operations Management Departments,” said Alcantara.

Previous awards and citations from the same awarding body were received by the company in 2014 and 2015, a testament to Manila Water's commitment to improve its operational efficiency and promote environmental sustainability through various energy management programs and innovations.

Now on its 34th year, the DEAEEA is an annual event that recognizes the private sectors’ efforts to promote and implement energy conservation programs, which is one of the many activities of DOE’s celebration of its National Energy Consciousness Month this December.
