Supply reliability does not only mean availability of drinking water for Manila Water’s 5.3 million residents in the East Zone. It also means water is available in all its nearly 2,300 fire hydrants, ready to be tapped for fire prevention and firefighting.
Fires have been common occurrences any time of the year though more during the summer months. Further damage to properties could have been prevented if water from fire hydrants is available all the time; hence, part of Manila Water’s reliability program is to ensure that supply and pressure of water in all its fire hydrants are adequate 24 hours a day.
Manila Water installs one fire hydrant for every 250 meter radius in residential areas and one fire hydrant at an interval of 300 meter radius for commercial areas. All projects completed under Manila Water’s flagship program Tubig Para Sa Barangay (TPSB) included at least a fire hydrant for each low-income community.
Just recently, a fire drill and fire hydrant launch at Sitio Sapa, Barangay Pagasa, Binangonan, Rizal kicked off Manila Water’s hydrant reliability program for 2008. Sitio Sapa is one of the many low-income beneficiaries of World Bank’s Global Partnership for Output-Based Assistance (GPOBA) where around 200 water service connections will be installed.
