Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte paid tribute to Manila Water Company as one of its reliable partners in delivering the basic services to the residents of Quezon City, at least in the East Concession Area, for the past ten years.

The water and wastewater service concessionaire recently marked a decade of successful public private sector partnership, since the state-run Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) was privatized in 1997. Mayor Belmonte cited Manila Water for making water available 24 hours daily to 100% of the residents of the east concession of Quezon City. Sitio Payong was the last area in Quezon City which was connected early this year to the Manila Water network.
Besides the vast improvement in the water services, Mayor Belmonte also cited Manila Water for its pioneering efforts in promoting an environment-friendly Quezon City through the latter’s free desludging program dubbed as Sanitasyon Para Sa Barangay (SPSB), specifically for areas which are not sewered and are totally dependent on individual or communal septic tanks. Manila Water has also upgraded a number of communal septic tanks within Quezon City such as Belarmino in Project 4, Philam Life, Kalayaan, Sikatuna, among others. It has also completed the University of the Philippines Sewage Treatment Plant which serves the UP Campus and outlying areas.
Mayor Belmonte also discussed with Manila Water officials led by its President Antonino T. Aquino, the planned development of the Quezon City Central Business District. This will allow Manila Water to include an integrated water and wastewater system in the planned development of the North Triangle area.
Manila Water President Antonino T. Aquino, for his part, shared his company’s commitments to the Mayor. Mr. Aquino said that Manila Water has already included in its business plan the construction of water and wastewater infrastructure that would support the further development of the city’s central business district. Both Mayor Belmonte and President Aquino also agreed that the city’s right-of-way issues need to be addressed by converting these areas in city parks and playground and recreational sites.
