Manila Water steps up sanitation program in Taguig

Posted: Tuesday March 18, 2008

Over 40,000 residents of Taguig are set to be the recipients of Manila Water’s intensified septic tank desludging program this year. Done in partnership with the local government of Taguig, the “Sanitasyon Para Sa Barangay” (SPSB) program provides free scheduled siphoning of household septic tanks, with particular focus on low-income communities.

Through the SPSB, Manila Water aims to promote the overall sanitation conditions in poor communities to prevent diseases caused by improper management of wastewater such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhea. Moreover, said program helps alleviate the pollution in Metro Manila’s river system which are heavily-polluted by untreated domestic wastes.

The program is closely aligned with Manila Water’s commitment to help build communities and protect the environment, as well as Taguig’s vision to be the premier city in the Philippines. Furthermore, the drive for an intensified sanitation program is in support of the International Year of Sanitation and in compliance with the Clean Water Act.

The SPSB was piloted at Signal Village, to be followed by Lower and Western Bicutan, and then the rest of the communities in Taguig.
