Manila Water Prequalifies for Sewerage Project in Hong Kong

Posted: Friday June 1, 2007

Manila Water Company, a member of the Ayala Group, recently pre-qualified for a design, build and operate (DBO) of sewerage treatment works at Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, both located in Lamma Island in Hong Kong. The proposed two (2) wastewater treatment plants will have a total capacity of more than 4 million liters per day.

Manila Water has teamed up with Jardine Engineering Corporation of Singapore, Fujita of Japan and Sun Fook Kong Group of Hong Kong to forming the LSTW Joint Venture for the 10-year contract extendable to another 5 years.

The Drainage Services Department of the Hong Kong Government which owns the project, recently informed the Joint Venture that it has been selected in the list of prequalified tenderers. It also mentioned that the bid documents will be released sometime between June and July. The project intends to start construction in January 2008.

This is the Department’s pioneer attempt to involve the private sector in the construction and operation of their wastewater facilities. If successful, the Hong Kong Government intends to include in its pipeline a number of bigger and similar wastewater projects for private sector participation.

Manila Water’s experience in wastewater helped the Joint Venture comply with its high experience requirements. Manila Water during the last 5 years completed 28 package wastewater treatment plants as part of the US$64 Million World Bank Loan for the Manila Third Sewerage Project, the latest of which is the biggest Septage Treatment Plant located in FTI Taguig recently inaugurated by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. In the next five (5) years, Manila Water plans to spend an estimated amount of P6.4 Billion to expand the sewerage coverage area in the East Zone from the current 15% to about 32% by the year 2012.

Just recently, Manila Water Company was also prequalified to bid for the US$44 Million Non Revenue Water Contract in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
