Manila Water cited by FinanceAsia as one of Asia’s greenest companies. The companies were cited on the basis of their efforts to develop and innovate alternative solutions that put them in a position to gain most from their increasing focus on sustainability.

FinanceAsia is a monthly magazine that focuses on Asia and its capital markets and widely read by Asia’s CEOs, CFOs, global asset investors, financial markets professionals, regulators and government officials.

The other top corporations in the “greenest” list include Singapore-listed Noble Group, Hong Kong’s Fook Woo, China-based Suntech Power Holdings, India’s Suzlon Energy, Hyflux, Japan’s largest automakers Toyota and Honda, Hong Kong-based Swire Pacific and China’s Dragon Power. Manila Water is the only Philippine company that made it to the list.

In choosing the finalists, FinanceAsia consulted environmental watchdog groups and specialists in the field to help compile the list of Asia’s top 10 green companies.

According to FinanceAsia, “Saving the planet does not have to cost you the earth. In fact, investing in companies that produce environmentally friendly products can be very profitable, both for investors and for the planet.”

“Manila Water made the list for developing a successful business model that also improves the lives of millions. Consider that 10 years ago only 58% of the three million population in Manila had water available for 16 hours a day. Now, thanks to its public and private partnership in the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, 99% of the 5.3 million people in Manila have water 24 hours a day,” the magazine said.

To achieve this success, Antonino T. Aquino, Manila Water president said, “It has been the company’s policy to subscribe to straightforward prescriptions of making sure that Manila Water’s social and environmental objectives were aligned with our business goals.”
