Manila Water hosted the recent visit of senior representatives from the water sector of Aguas de Mozambique (AdeM), Fundo de Investimentos E Patrimonio Abastecemento De Agua (FIPAG) and Water Regulatory Council of Mozambique (CRA).
The visit was also made possible by the Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) which is an international organization dedicated to provide water and sanitation access to better serve the urban poor.
As a concessionaire, AdeM holds an equivalent position in Maputo in Mozambique as Manila Water is the East Zone concessionaire in Metro Manila. AdeM was granted a concession by the asset holder, FIPAG, for Maputo and other towns, and are both regulated by the CRA.
The current situation in Maputo is very much similar to the situation in the East Zone of Metro Manila prior to the privatization of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS). The visit allows a direct sharing of experiences and ideas that would benefit AdeM, FIPAG and the CRA interms of operation, asset management and regulation.
The delegation from Mozambique toured various facilities and projects of Manila Water which included the Balara Water Treatment Plant, the University of the Philippines Sewage Treatment Plant, the Manila South Septage Treatment Plant and several sustainable development projects such as the Tubig Para Sa Barangay or Water for the Community program and Kabuhayan Para Sa Barangay or Livelihood for the Community program.
The Mozambique officials and regulators also met with their counterparts from the MWSS as they shared their experiences in the aspect of water regulation.
