Manila Water started this month the construction of its biggest septage treatment plant (SpTP). The P608 million project, located in Pinugay, Antipolo City, is expected to benefit residents in the cities and municipalities of Antipolo, Cainta, Taytay, Binangonan and Pasig as well as parts of Rizal Province. The project is expected to have a total treatment capacity of 600 million liters per day upon its completion by 2008.

According to Manila Water President Tony Aquino, the project is being implemented on time.
“We are very much on track, as regards our wastewater plans,” Mr. Aquino said. “We have just inaugurated last month another septage treatment plant located at FTI in Taguig and another one is expected to be inaugurated this month in San Mateo. “
“With the completion of the Pinugay septage treatment plant in 2008, we expect to be able to significantly contribute to the environmental initiatives of our government, by improving sanitation services and minimizing the raw wastewater discharge that pollutes our water systems, particularly the Pasig River.”
The septage treatment facilities will clean the wastewater collected from household septic tanks through Manila Water’s desludging efforts. The company deploys more than 40 desludging tankers all over the East Zone of Metro Manila.
The Asian Development Bank is funding the Pinugay project through a $12 million loan that covers plant construction and truck procurement. This is under the Pasig River Rehabilitation Project.
Earlier, the company had also announced its plans to invest close to P5 billion in various wastewater projects aimed at improving sewerage and sanitation services in Metro Manila’s East Zone. With this investment, the company intends to improve the wastewater coverage in its concession area, which covers 23 major cities and municipalities in Metro Manila.
