Manila Water Company and Maynilad Water Services, the two private concessionaires providing water and wastewater services to the metropolis and its environs is strongly urging the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) to stop drawing any more water for power generation from the Angat Dam. The appeal is being aired in the face of the continued decline in the water level of the Angat Dam that serves as the main source of water supply for 15 million residents of Metro Manila . The El Niño phenomenon is causing less rainfall and water to flow into Angat River. Water levels at the Angat Dam is now at 200.73 meters as of 12:00 noon on January 15, down by five meters below the lower rule curve of 205.31 meters. The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) has reduced the raw water allocation for both concessionares to 3, 715 million liters per day (MLD) for January 2010, down by 6.5 percent from 4,000 Mld last Deecember 2009. If the El Nino phenomenon will prevail, the allocation will go down further to 3,024 Mld by May and June. The two concessionaires are now urging the NAPOCOR to act on their request so available water at the Angat Dam will be prioritized solely for domestic water use as embodied in the National Water Code.
