Manila Water, Makati Elementary School initiate partnership for the environment · Tuesday April 29, 2008

The environmental corner would showcase the latest news on the environment particularly caring for water as a precious resource as well as advocating the need for wastewater management. Domestic wastewater has been tagged as a major culprit in the pollution of our river ways in Metro Manila.

Makati Elementary School is one of the latest beneficiaries of Manila Water’s Lingap Eskwela program which ensures the highest quality of water supply for schools in order to promote better hygiene and sanitation among schoolchildren. More than 1,320 students and school workers stand to benefit from this program. Besides the rehabilitation of the school’s water system and installation of a drinking fountain, a fire hydrant was also put up as a preventive measure in the event of fire. Working closely with the Bureau of Fire Protection, a fire drill was also conducted to inform the children on what they must do in case a fire breaks out.

Manila Water has put paramount importance on ensuring that schools are equipped with the basic waste and sanitation infrastructure to promote an environment conducive to education. As water is an essential component of the environment, putting up an environment corner is one way of promoting environmental consciousness among students even at a very young age.

Gracing the ceremonial ribbon cutting for the environmental corner, Lingap Eskwela and fire hydrant inauguration are Norma Tumambing, Consultant for Pre-school in Makati representing Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay; Mildred Castillo, Planning and Development Head of Makati City; Jose Embang, BFP Chief Inspector; Dr. Elena Ruiz, Division of City Schools Superintendent for Makati, Zenaida Penafuerte, Makati Elementary School Principal and Joey Cadorna, Manila Water Area Business Manager for Makati.
